This art work was bought by my good friend DJ Warren. It is a piece which discusses Music Technology and the ability for anyone to now produce their own music, DJ or run a radio station, thanks to the internet. The internet has been a great leveller. Music is now easily available to everyone and most club promoters now heavily rely on it to promote events. The ‘DJ’ in this painting is connected to the decks directly by robotic hands. The decks hang off of these robotic appendages like scales. They represent balance, ying yan, on and off (as does the theater mask). It is the combination of the opposites of on and off pulses, which create energy and thus a reaction. Music to me is a spiritual thing (hence the church, the reference to God and The Faithless song by the same name), an echo of our existence, a giver of great joy. One could say that a DJ is worshipped like a ‘False Idol’ but I think that music has a wider and more genuine agenda. It tears away barriers within society, destroys social norms and dissipates social prejudices. Music frees the soul.
My friend Warren thinks I have painted him on the decks. He thinks that he is represented playing to his friends, including myself (The blonde girl with bunches). If this gives him joy then I am happy to accept his reading of the painting. I am so glad that he really appreciates the work. This connection with the viewer/buyer is what art is all about!
