Underneath Manufactured Fear, I have placed my personification of fear called Addiction/Oblivion. In the young man’s hand is a bottle of the highly alcoholic drink Absinthe (otherwise known as ‘The Green Fairy’). Using intoxicating drugs, including alcohol and prescription drugs, to excess, is a way that many of us try to blank out the horrors of this world. We use these because are frightened, but rather than deal with our fears, we run away from them and enter a different reality in order to feel safe. But this is a very dangerous way to deal with fear because, paradoxically, it can kill us. My painting is an expressionist re-working of John Martin’s painting called ‘Sadak in search of the waters of Oblivion’.
